MICO DE NOCHE (AOTUS)
Las especies del género Aotus son  son los únicos verdaderos monos nocturnos que hay en el mundo. Entre sus adaptaciones más importantes a la vida en la oscuridad se cuentan sus enormes ojos, que hacen que estos animales tengan una apariencia sorprendida y no muy distinta a la cara de un búho. En tamaño, estos monos son bastante pequeños, algo mayores que un tití (Saguinus); llegan a alcanzar un peso de 1 kg o poco más. Al igual que los titíes, tienen una cola que no es prensil.

Los micos de noche viven en familias muy unidas, que por lo general incluyen entre dos y cuatro miembros. Todos los integrantes de la familia permanecen muy cerca unos de otros, tanto cuando se están desplazando como cuando están descansando. Durante el día, toda la familia de monos se refugia en un lugar oscuro, a menudo situado en un agujero de un gran tronco. Los micos de noche no son exigentes en cuanto a su hábitat y pueden sobrevivir en fragmentos bastante pequeños de bosque. El requisito es que queden en pie algunos grandes árboles con agujeros donde puedan instalar su vivienda.

Muchas personas no asocian los climas fríos de las montañas con la presencia de monos. Más bien, suele creerse que estos animales son propios de selvas calurosas y lejanas, en el Chocó y el Amazonas. Es cierto que la mayor parte de los monos sí vive en zonas bajas. Pero también hay varias especies que viven en las montañas por encima de 2000 metros sobre el nivel del mar. En los alrededores de la capital, el mico de noche habita en la franja de bosques nublados que se desarrollan en la vertiente occidental de la cordillera, afuera de la Sabana de Bogotá.

THE NIGHT MONKEYS (AOTUS)

The species of the genus Aotus are the only truly nocturnal monkeys in the world. Among its adaptations most important to the life in the dark fund her huge eyes, that make these animals have a surprised appearance and not unlike the face of an owl. Many people don’t associate the cold climates of the mountains with the presence of monkeys. Rather, it usually believed that these animals are unique of hot and distant forests, in the Chocó and the Amazon. It is true that most of the other monkeys living in low lying areas. But there are several species that live in the mountains above 2000 meters above sea level.
